Secondary lymphoedema is a swelling of an arm, leg or body part which is
caused by surgery and/or radiation therapy or trauma. The swelling is an
accumulation of protein-rich lymphatic fluid in the tissues. Primary lymphoedema is a condition where lymph nodes and lymph vessels
are absent or abnormal and may be present at birth, develop at puberty
or in midlife.
Early warning signs of lymphoedema are pain, tension, tightness or a feeling
of fullness in the affected limb. Watches, rings, clothing or shoes feel tighter.
Learn skills at an early stage to manage your lymphoedema with a
home maintenance program of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD),
Lymphatic Decongestive Exercises and skin care.
For an arm or leg at risk of lymphoedema adopt a preventive strategy
after cancer surgery.
